By consistently representing Portugal at the European Championship, Cristiano Ronaldo has cemented his place as one of the best football players in European history.

The 39-year-old is a devastating player on the international scene in addition to holding numerous records in the club game, the Champions League, and for Real Madrid and Manchester United.

We’ve found six insane records from the Euros that Ronaldo now holds, in addition to a few more that he might break before the 2024 tournament is over.

Cristiano Most Goals Scored

Although Ronaldo hasn’t officially registered any goal in Euro 2024, he would just be adding to his record at this point.

More than 20 years ago, when he was still a teenager, he began his European Championship account by scoring against a Greek team that would go on to win the championship in Ronaldo’s native country.

Since then, he has scored in every competition, increasing his total goal total for the Euros to 14—five more than the previous record-holder, the illustrious Michel Platini.

Most Assists Provided

During Portugal’s 3-0 victory over Turkey at Euro 2024, Ronaldo created yet another record by setting up Bruno Fernandes for the third goal—when he might have easily scored it himself.

At the European Championships, he has now tallied eight assists, an absolute record.

Most Appearances

Cristiano Ronaldo has made the most appearances in the competition history due to his incredible longevity, fitness, and performance in every tournament since 2004.

Portugal has consistently advanced to the knockout stages during his tenure. With one game remaining, they managed to earn the top slot in their group. They have advanced to the final twice, the semifinals, the quarterfinals, and the Round of 16. Only time will tell how far they can go in 2024.

Throughout his six European Championships, he has made 27 appearances, six more than his seasoned Portugal teammate Pepe.

Most Euros Played

Dependable teammate Pepe, who is a few years older than Ronaldo, did not change his national allegiance until 2007, even though he was still regarded as a Brazilian at the 2004 Euro.

Ronaldo is now the first player in history to have participated in six European Championships overall, as well as the only player to have participated in each of the previous six.

Only four players—Luka Modric, Pepe, Iker Casillas, and Rui Patricio—have appeared in five European championships.

Considering that Portugal had only qualified for three European Championships before making his debut for his country, that’s very impressive progress.

Most Wins

Considering Portugal’s generally impressive record during Ronaldo’s extensive individual career, it should come as no surprise that he has the most individual victories.

In the 27 Euros games in which he has appeared, Ronaldo has won 14, drawn 7, lost 6, and played 2334 minutes total—166 minutes per goal and 111 minutes each assist.

Most Consistent Scorer

Ronaldo has scored in every European Championship since 2004. This does not include Euro 2024, even though he still has time to add to his record and score in Germany. He is the only player with five tournament scores.

He scored goals against Wales in 2016, Hungary and Germany, and France in 2020, the Czech Republic in 2008, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic in 2012, Greece and the Netherlands in 2004.

According to speculations, Barcelona could be barred from competing in the 2024/25 Champions League due to financial breaches.

The Blaugrana advanced to the round of 16 after topping Group H, and will face Serie A champions Napoli in two games.

However, according to new allegations, the team is facing expulsion from Europe’s top club competition after violating Financial Fair Play rules.

Barcelona’s financial problems have been well chronicled in recent years, yet they recorded a net profit of 304 million euros in September.

The club’s balance sheets, however, were described as “a mess” by WELT.

UEFA fined Barcelona €500,000 in the summer after the governing body’s financial control chamber ruled that the Catalan club “incorrectly declared profits” and that their income was not “relevant.”

According to reports, a ban of “two to three years” is feasible, with the approach “the greater the loss, the greater the penalty.”

However, given that they are one of the driving factors behind the European Super League’s relaunch, a prospective ban may not have as great of an impact as one might think.

Barca responded swiftly to the European Union of Justice judgement on Thursday, expressing their wish to be a part of the breakaway league.

A statement read: “FC Barcelona wishes to express its satisfaction with the sentence of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) assessing the Super League project as proposed by A22 Sports.

“As one of the clubs driving the Super League project, FC Barcelona feels that the sentence paves the way for a new elite level football competition in Europe by opposing the monopoly over the football world, and wishes to initiate new discussions as to the path that European competitions should take in the future.”

However, a long range of clubs have distanced themselves from any connection, and both UEFA and FIFA have stated that the verdict makes no difference.

A22 Sports, the European Super League’s backer, unveiled fresh suggestions for a Champions League alternative on Thursday after a European court ruled that UEFA’s rules barring the development of new tournaments were “unlawful.”

Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22 Sports, revealed plans for a three-league, 64-club men’s competition and a two-league, 32-club women’s competition. It would be the successor to the UEFA Champions League and the Women’s Champions League.

So far, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Barcelona president Joan Laporta have publicly backed the A22 plans, while the players’ union, FIFPRO, as well as UEFA, FIFA, and the European Club Association (ECA), have spoken out against a new Europe-wide club competition.

The Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, and Ligue 1 leagues, as well as teams such as Manchester United and Bayern Munich, have all stated their opposition to a Super League.

“The ruling does not endorse the so-called ‘European Super League’ and the Premier League continues to reject any such concept,” the Premier League said in a statement.

Manchester United said in a statement on Thursday, “Our position has not changed.” We remain fully committed to participating in UEFA competitions and to beneficial engagement with UEFA, the Premier League, and other clubs on the future growth of the European game through the ECA.”

On Thursday, Bayern Munich echoed Manchester United, saying that “such a competition would be an attack on the importance of national leagues and the structure of European football.”

What’s The New ESL Format?

A22 proposed launching a new sports streaming network to broadcast the Super League, claiming that all matches would be free to viewers, with revenue earned through advertising, premium subscriptions, and sponsorship.

According to A22, the men’s Super League would be divided into two leagues: the “Star” and “Gold” leagues, each with 16 clubs, and a third “Blue League” with 32 clubs.

The leagues would be promoted and relegated, with entrance to the Blue League determined by domestic league performance.

Clubs would compete in groups of eight, home and away, with a minimum of 14 midweek matches per year. At the end of each season, the winners of each league would be determined by a knockout tournament of eight clubs.

In the women’s Super League, there would be two leagues, the “Star” and “Gold” leagues, with 16 clubs in each, playing in groups of eight in a similar structure.

A22 stated that income would be guaranteed for the first three years, and that “solidarity payments” would account for 8% of Super League revenue, with a minimum payment of €400 million ($439 million).

According to the group, the plan is the result of “extensive dialogue” with fans, players, teams, and leagues over the last two years.

What Does Footballing Powers Say About ESL?

The German Football League (DFL), which oversees the Bundesliga, stated that it “explicitly supports the European sports model and rejects competitions other than those organized by federations and leagues.”

Ligue 1 in France has stated that it “unequivocally supports” UEFA competitions.

On the verdict and A22 Sports’ revised format proposal, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin stated on Thursday: “Football is not for sale.”

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has stated unequivocally that the club supports UEFA.

“Paris Saint-Germain rejects wholly and completely any so-called Super League project, which has been the case since day one and will always remain the case,” he said.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) reiterated its resolve to defend national championships “in defence of the broader and more general principle of sporting merit and respect for international calendars.”

The EU’s highest court found that FIFA and UEFA misused their dominating position by outright prohibiting clubs from competing in a European Super League, but underlined that the tournament may still be rejected.

The European Union’s top court ruled on Thursday that UEFA and FIFA violated competition law by rejecting plans for a breakaway Super League.

The lawsuit was heard in the Court of Justice last year after the Super League failed to launch in April 2021. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin referred to the club leaders as “snakes” and “liars” and threatened to ban players from Super League clubs.

The business founded by 12 rebel teams — currently led by only Real Madrid and Barcelona after Juventus withdrew this year — began legal action to defend its stance, and a Madrid tribunal asked the court to rule on matters of EU law.

UEFA was accused by the clubs of violating European law by allegedly exploiting its market dominance in football competitions.

“The FIFA and UEFA rules making any new interclub football project subject to their prior approval, such as the Super League, and prohibiting clubs and players from playing in those competitions, are unlawful,” the court said.

“There is no framework for the FIFA and UEFA rules ensuring that they are transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate.”

Although the verdict will enhance Super League promoters’ hopes of restarting their project, the court stated that it “does not necessarily mean that a competition such as the Super League project must necessarily be approved.”

“The court, having been asked generally about the FIFA and UEFA rules, does not rule on that specific project in its judgment.”

What Changes Has Been Made In Super League Idea?

Super League organizers proposed a new plan in February for a multi-division competition comprising up to 80 European football teams and operating outside of UEFA’s jurisdiction, two years after the initial scheme failed.

English clubs are unlikely to join such a resurrected proposal. The Premier League’s international appeal and financial power have only grown in the previous two years, and a measure announced last month by King Charles offered powers to prevent English teams from joining a breakaway league.

The government stated in a paper detailing the new Football Governance Bill that the European Super League was “fundamentally uncompetitive” and “threatened to undermine the footballing pyramid against the wishes of fans.”

The finding released on Thursday was the most anticipated sports case by the Court of Justice since the so-called Bosman finding in 1995.

That lawsuit upended soccer’s transfer system, increased salaries for top players who became free agents when their contracts expired, and widened a financial and competitive gulf between wealthy teams and the rest.

The proposed 20-team Super League, with guaranteed spots for up to 15 founders, would have effectively superseded the Champions League, undermining domestic leagues’ sporting and commercial appeal.

The absence of relegation was fundamentally at odds with European football, which, unlike major sports leagues in the United States, has the risk and reward of moving up or down divisions based on performance.

When the Super League was announced as an alternative to the UEFA-run Champions League, the rebel clubs from England, Spain, and Italy faced significant scorn.

There are talks underway to revive European Super League

A few months ago, European Super League was in trend with most of the fans against it. This was because of the discrimination which was going to happen between the rich and poor clubs.

UEFA and FIFA came with a solution to stop the Super Cup. They said that the players participating in the Super Cup will be banned from playing in FFA Club World Cup and international duties.

On 21st April, ESL was suspended and football restored its power. The announcement came when all the top six Premier League clubs resigned from the ESL.

However, Florentino Perez is trying to revive the league, but with radical new changes this time. It will follow a similar qualifying criteria as UEFA Champions League.

According to The Athletic, ESL could follow a much bigger competition structure. The revised-criteria says:

  • The original top tier ‘Super League’ of 20 teams, with two 20-team feeder leagues will immediately sit below it.
  • There will a third tier involving four more leagues of 20 teams. That means an astonishing total of 140 clubs would be included.
  • A smaller team may only play six group stage matches before seeing their European adventure come to an end – should they finish bottom of the group.

As we all know – Juventus, Real Madrid, and Barcelona were the only clubs that stood against UEFA’s warning. And now the league is going to be restored by these three of the most powerful clubs in Europe.
