Following Thursday’s EU court ruling that UEFA and FIFA violated EU law by prohibiting the development of a Super League, major clubs and leagues across Europe rejected the Super League in favour of the status quo.

Manchester United, as well as German champions Bayern Munich, were among the first to state that they would continue to compete in UEFA events.

United was one of the 12 clubs involved in the founding of the breakaway Super League in April 2021 but withdrew owing to fan, government, and player pressure.

“Our position has not changed. We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions, and to positive cooperation with UEFA, the Premier League, and fellow clubs through the ECA on the continued development of the European game,” the club said.

Before withdrawing, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur were the other five Premier League clubs interested.

Two months after withdrawing from the project in 2021, the six English teams announced a combined 22 million pounds ($27.78 million) as “a gesture of goodwill” to be used for the sake of the game, including increased investment to support fans, grassroots football, and community programmes.

Premier League Against ESL

The Premier League stated they would be docked 30 points if they attempted a similar manoeuvre again, and they would each be fined 25 million pounds.

“The ruling does not endorse the so-called “European Super League” and the Premier League continues to reject any such concept,” the Premier League said in a statement.

“Supporters are of vital importance to the game and they have time and again made clear their opposition to a ‘breakaway’ competition that severs the link between domestic and European football.”

Bayern Munich Says ‘No’

Bayern Munich stated that they are committed to UEFA competitions and that the Super League “remains closed” for the German champions.

“The Bundesliga is the foundation of FC Bayern, just as all national leagues are the foundation of other European football clubs,” Bayern CEO Jan Christian Dreesen said.

“It is therefore our duty and our deep conviction to strengthen them, not to weaken them. We are also committed to the European club competitions under the umbrella of UEFA.”

The German Football League (DFL), which oversees the Bundesliga, stated that it “explicitly supports the European sports model and rejects competitions other than those organised by the federations and leagues.”

According to the European Club Association (ECA), which represents nearly 500 clubs across the continent, the football world “moved on from the Super League years ago.”

“Through ECA, clubs today are already at the heart of decision-making in relation to the competitions they participate in,” the ECA said.

“Most importantly, football is a social contract not a legal contract.

“All the recognised stakeholders… spanning confederations, federations, clubs, leagues, players and fans stand more united than ever against the attempts by a few individuals pursuing personal agendas to undermine the very foundations and basic principles of European football.”

PSG Not Interested In Supporting The Idea

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) of France has stated that it “unequivocally supports” UEFA competitions.

“For the defence of the broader and more general principle of sporting merit and the respect of international calendars,” the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) reaffirmed its determination to safeguard the national championships.

“The FIGC believes that the Super League is not a project compatible with these conditions and will always act in pursuing the general interests of Italian football,” it added.

The European football governing body will throw out the trio and give a big fine punishment.

According to the reports, Spain and Italy wouldn’t lose their places in Europe’s top club competition next season. However, the players below the trio would take their spots.

For example, Spanish clubs Real Sociedad and Real Betis will take the spots of Los Blancos and Barcelona from September.

The other nine teams will just be fined a percentage of the money from their next European campaigns. All the big six PL clubs included are expected to be given a similar punishment.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus together denied to leave the European Super League

No one can forget the days when European Super League was about to happen. Although the fans took the victory over the Super League idea, but it doesn’t end yet.

As of before, all the six Premier League clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham – have agreed to re-join the European Club Association, alongside AC Milan, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan.

All the founding clubs except Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, withdrew from league idea. However, Florentino Perez said that they can’t deny the Super League contract.

On Saturday, all three clubs released a strong statement to express their views on the matter.

It reads: “In relation to the statement released by UEFA on the 7th May in respect of the Super League and the position taken by 9 of its founding clubs, Fútbol Club Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid Club de Fútbol state the following:

I- The founding clubs have suffered, and continue to suffer, unacceptable third-party pressures, threats, and offenses to abandon the project and therefore desist from their right and duty to provide solutions to the football ecosystem via concrete proposals and constructive dialogue. This is intolerable under the rule of law and Tribunals have already ruled in favour of the Super League proposal, ordering FIFA and UEFA to, either directly or through their affiliated bodies, refrain from taking any action which may hinder this initiative in any way while court proceedings are pending.

II- The Super League project was designed jointly by its 12 founding clubs:

a. with the aim of providing solutions to the current unsustainable situation in the football industry. The 12 founding clubs shared the same concerns -as other stakeholders in European football do-, particularly under the current socio-economic context, that structural reforms are indispensable to ensure our sport stays appealing and survives in the long-term. To that effect, on 18th April, they announced their willingness to create the Super League and establish a channel of communication with UEFA and FIFA, in a constructive spirit of collaboration between the parties, as it was so notified to each of them on such date;

b. with the utmost respect for the current football structures and ecosystem. The founding clubs expressly agreed that the Super League would only take place if such a competition was recognised by UEFA and/or FIFA or if, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, it was deemed to be a competition duly compatible for all purposes with the continuity of the founding clubs in their respective domestic competitions. However, despite being aware of the above terms, UEFA and FIFA have so far refused to establish any adequate channel of communication; and

c. to bring financial stability to the entire European football family, currently under the effects of a deep crisis that threatens the survival of many clubs. Testament of it, the announced commitment to establish annual solidarity payments for guaranteed annual amounts that materially multiply those distributed by UEFA, and the obligation to reinforce financial sustainability rules, through the creation of a clear, transparent and effective control system verified by experts.

III- The 12 founding clubs also acknowledged that the Super League was a unique opportunity to offer fans around the world the best possible show and to reinforce global interest in the sport, which is not a “given” and is challenged by new generational trends. Moreover, one of its main objectives was to promote women’s football on a global level, a tremendous, but currently underestimated, opportunity for the sector.

IV- We are fully aware of the diversity of reactions to the Super League initiative and, consequently, of the need to reflect on the reasons for some of them. We are ready to reconsider the proposed approach, as necessary. However, we would be highly irresponsible if, being aware of the needs and systemic crisis in the football sector, which led us to announce the Super League, we abandoned such mission to provide effective and sustainable answers to the existential questions that threaten the football industry.

V- We regret to see that our friends and founding partners of the Super League project have now found themselves in such inconsistent and contradictory position when signing a number of commitments to UEFA yesterday. However, given that the material issues that led the 12 founding clubs to announce the Super League weeks ago have not gone away, we reiterate that, to honour our history, to comply with our obligations towards our stakeholders and fans, for the good of football and for the financial sustainability of the sector, we have the duty to act in a responsible manner and persevere in the pursuit of adequate solutions, despite the unacceptable and ongoing pressures and threats received from UEFA.

VI- Mostly, we reiterate to FIFA, UEFA and all football stakeholders, as we have done on several occasions since the announcement of the Super League, our commitment and firm will to discuss, with respect and without intolerable pressure and in accordance with the rule of law, the most appropriate solutions for the sustainability of the whole football family. (Source: sportbible)

“I don’t need to explain what a binding contract is, but effectively the clubs cannot leave,” Perez told Spanish outlet AS.

“Some of them, due to pressure, have said they’re leaving. But this project, or one very similar, will move forward and I hope very soon.”

“They have taken some time for reflection, just like the 12 clubs,” said Perez. “If we need to make changes we will but the Super League is the best project we’ve thought of.

“What we have done is taken a few weeks to reflect in light of the fury of certain people who don’t want to lose their privileges and have manipulated the project.”

Real Madrid chairman also gave a cold response to the Champions League reform announced by UEFA, which will see the competition expanded to 36 teams from 2024.

“The Super League is the best possible project to help football come out of the crisis,” Perez said. Football is gravely hurt and we have to adapt to the era we live in.”

“I think that the Champions League reform isn’t the best it can be, and what’s more we cannot wait until 2024.”

Manchester United fans protest over Joel Glazer’s ownership

The match between Manchester United and Liverpool was postponed due to protest made by Manchester United fans outside the Old Trafford.

The protest was made against Man Utd owner Joel Glazer. I think you guys are aware about what happened in April 2021.

So why did these fans protest against Glazer’s ownership? Let us tell you the summary of what happened in April 2021.

Florentino Perez proposed the idea of the European Super League to 15 biggest clubs in Europe. Only 12 clubs accepted the proposal.

Fans protested against the Super League idea for 3 days until the league was suspended. These 3 days were one of the darkest days in football history, but fans finally took their victory.

“This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities,” said the Premier League.

“The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance,” added the Premier League.

“We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated Covid-19 breaches.

“We sympathize with the police and stewards who had to deal with a dangerous situation that should have no place in football.”

Manchester Untied was one of the 12 clubs who accepted the idea. Though Man Utd fans protested against the idea before, but they weren’t satisfied with that.

Even though the league was suspended, Man Utd fans wants to snatch Glazer’s ownership on the club. If this happens, Man Utd fans will have their greatest victory.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are currently second in the Premier League and a Liverpool win on Sunday would have handed Manchester City the title for the third time in four seasons.

Talks will now take place about rearranging the game.
