Why Otavio ruled out of Portugal’s squad ahead of Euro 2024?

A few weeks after naming his team, manager Roberto Martinez had to bring in a substitute for Portugal due to a serious injury setback ahead of Euro 2024.

Martinez announced his complete team early; on May 21, the Spaniard revealed a preliminary 26-man roster.

Twenty years after competing for Portugal in his first-ever competitive competition at Euro 2004, Cristiano Ronaldo leads the team in his sixth tournament appearance.

Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota, Ruben Dias, and Bernardo Silva are among the Premier League players involved; Joao Felix, Joao Cancelo, and Diogo Costa are all anticipated to have significant roles.

Why Otavio ruled out ?

Wide midfielder Otavio, a teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, was another player included in the inaugural group.

The 29-year-old earned a berth in Portugal’s tentative Euro 2024 squad by scoring 10 goals in the league and dishing out five assists for Luis Castro’s team.

However, he sustained an injury during the King’s Cup final while playing for Al Nassr, which will prevent him from participating in the competition at all.

According to Abola, Matheus Nunes, a midfielder for Manchester City, was called up to take his place.

A Portuguese FA statement read: “Matheus Nunes was called up this Tuesday by Roberto Martinez for Euro 2024.

“The Manchester City midfielder will take the place left vacant by the dismissal of Otavio, who was injured while playing for Al Nassr.

“Otavio was evaluated this Monday by the FPF Health and Performance Unit, which concluded that it was impossible for the player to recover in time to participate in the European Championship, in Germany.”

Martinez kept Nunes, 25, out of the starting lineup for Euro 2024 despite the fact that he has 12 caps for Portugal since his senior debut in 2021.

The midfielder, who cost £53 million to sign from Wolves, was called up for the country’s most recent team in March. However, he has only started nine Premier League games for City this season. Now, however, he has the opportunity to have a significant influence in Germany.
