34-year old Mesut Ozil announced his retirement from professional football on Wednesday, 22nd March. He is undoubtedly one of the best playmakers of all time, not to mention fourth highest assist provider in history.
On Wednesday, Ozil posted on his Instagram account regarding his retirement and thank all of his teammates, family and friends.
“After thoughtful consideration, I’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football. I’ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years and I feel Incredibly thankful for the opportunity,” Ozil wrote in his statement, shared on Instagram.
“But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries. it’s became more and more clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football.
“It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions. I want to thank my clubs – Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbalçe, Basalsehir and the coaches who supported me, plus teammates who have become friends.
“Special thanks must go to my family members and my closest friends. They have been a part of my journey from day one and have given me so much love and support, through the good times and the bad.”
The biggest reason behind his retirement is his injuries that he has suffered in recent times. It obvious he couldn’t risk getting hurt frequently and so he took this decision in order to give more time to his family.
The German also thanked his fans for supporting him through all those years of his career. He said he is looking forward to spending more time with his family in his post-retirement life.
“Thank you to all my fans who have shown me so much love no matter the circumstances and no matter which club I was representing.

“Now I’m looking forward to everything that is in front of me with my beautiful wife, Amine, and my two beautiful daughters, Eda and El – but you can be sure that you will hear from me from.”
Ozil won the 2014 World Cup with Germany and made 92 appearances for the senior national team. He announced his retirement from international football in 2018 after calling out racism and lashing out at the German football federation following political tension over his Turkish ancestry.
