After starting his career in 1976 with Club Universidad Nacional, Sánchez briefly spent 1979 on loan with the San Diego Sockers of the North American Soccer League.
He relocated to Spain in 1981 to play for Atlético Madrid. He spent four years with the Colchoneros before switching to cross-town rivals Real Madrid, where he would spend the best years of his career and garner a plethora of honors and trophies.
He guided UNAM to two back-to-back league titles as manager. He was appointed Mexico’s national team coach in 2006 after managing Necaxa.
However, his downgrade had him fired in March 2008. After being appointed manager of Almera in 2009, Sánchez worked to prevent the team from being demoted.
