While managing Manchester United, Jose Mourinho created an award that was given to Scott McTominay.
During his tenure at United, McTominay played for four different managers, the first of whom was Mourinho.
At the end of the 2016–17 campaign, he made the Scotland international’s first-team debut by substituting him in a 2-0 loss to Arsenal.
The next season, McTominay made 23 appearances across all competitions as United advanced to the FA Cup final and finished second in the Premier League.
And Mourinho acknowledged his improvements in a original manner.
David de Gea won both the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year honours during the club’s end-of-season celebration.
Nevertheless, Mourinho took the stage and declared McTominay his “Manager’s Player of the Year,” a title that comes directly from the Sunday League.
McTominay was summoned and given the unexpected gong.
“The dream of every boy that arrives in the club is to play for the first team,” he said.
“The next dream is to play big matches in the Champions League and to play for the national team.
“This player did everything in five or six months so my player of the year has to be Scott McTominay.”
Later that year, Mourinho was fired and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as manager; nevertheless, McTominay disclosed that he was still under contract with the Portuguese coach and expressed gratitude to him for providing him with the chance.

At the age of five, McTominay became a member of United and progressed through the ranks to eventually make 255 appearances for his childhood team.
But the 27-year-old’s time with the Red Devils is coming to an end as he is set to sign a £25 million contract with Serie A team Napoli.
