UEFA Nations League: Germany squad, team news & schedule

When Germany revealed its roster for the UEFA Nations League matches against Italy this month, Leon Goretzka, Karim Adeyemi, and Nadiem Amiri were the standout returnees.

Due to his impressive performance with Mainz in the German Bundesliga this season, Amiri is the most well-known player returning to the team. Amiri has contributed significantly to the team’s ascent to third place in the league standings with seven goals and three assists across all competitions.

On March 20 and 23, Germany will meet Italy in the quarterfinals of the Nations League over two legs. The victor will then play the team that won the other quarterfinal, either Portugal or Denmark.

A number of changes were required as Germany attempts to make it to the Nations League final four for the first time due to injuries to important players like Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fuellkrug, and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Goretzka, a midfielder for Bayern Munich, last represented Germany in 2023, but he has since recovered to his previous level of performance. According to Julian Nagelsmann, the manager of Germany and his coach at Bayern,  “Leon is in a very good phase from a sporting perspective.”

This is the first time Nagelsmann has chosen Adeyemi, who hasn’t worn a Germany senior shirt since 2022.

Since taking over as manager of Germany in September 2023, Nagelsmann has consistently chosen players based on their performance rather than their reputation, frequently leaving well-known players off the roster.
