Two days after Roma lost 3-1 against AC Milan, Jose Mourinho was sacked leaving them in ninth place in Serie A.
Roma has announced that Jose Mourinho is leaving Roma “with immediate effect,” capping a sometimes fruitful but occasionally tumultuous tenure for the seasoned manager in the Italian capital.
Two days before to the transfer, Roma was in ninth place in Serie A and facing elimination from the Champions League for the sixth consecutive year following a 3-1 loss to AC Milan.
Last week, Lazio defeated Roma in an Italian Cup derby as well.
Mourinho’s contract at Roma was set to expire in June during his third season there. In his debut season, he guided the Giallorossi to the UEFA Conference League championship, and the previous season, Roma reached the Europa League finals.
However, Mourinho received a series of bans for his protests and tirades against officials, which were clearly not liked by Roma’s American owners.
UEFA barred Mourinho from four European games after he aggressively abused the Europa League final referee in a stadium garage following Roma’s defeat to Sevilla. Due to protests, he was also suspended for the game against Milan on Sunday.
Club’s Official Statement
“AS Roma can confirm that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement on Tuesday.
“We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” said owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin.
“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.” Roma added that updates on the coaching staff “will follow imminently.”
There have been rumours that the club is attempting to sign Antonio Conte for the upcoming campaign, while former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi is being considered as a potential interim manager.
