Barcelona defeated Brest 3-0 to go up to provisional second place in the Champions League group standings, and Robert Lewandowski scored his 100th goal of the competition.
Barcelona defeated Brest 3-0 on Tuesday to go up to provisional second place in the Champions League group standings, thanks to a goal from Robert Lewandowski that marked his 100th Champions League goal. In the tenth minute, the seasoned striker scored from the penalty spot to put the Catalans ahead and attain his milestone.
He then added a second goal late in the game to give the French team their first loss. Barca put up a strong performance after coach Hansi Flick challenged his team to “eliminate” faults from their game after losing points in their previous two La Liga games.
They scored right away when Lewandowski controlled Pedri’s cross on his chest and Brest custodian Marco Bizot carelessly clattered with his back. After ten minutes, the striker gathered himself and clinically scored the first goal to get his century.
Lewandowski became just the third player in the competition to achieve that feat, after former Barcelona star Lionel Messi (129) and former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo (140).
With 22 goals in 19 games between La Liga and the Champions League this season, the forward’s form has greatly improved under Flick. The 36-year-old previously played for German teams Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich before joining Barcelona, where he has made 125 Champions League matches.
“I am very happy, many years ago I did not think I could score more than 100 goals in the Champions League,” Lewandowski told Movistar.
“For me the most important thing is that we try to win every game, if I can score, then that’s the perfect solution.
“I don’t know how many games we have left before the end of the year but we have to win them all and rest over Christmas.”
