On Wednesday, Real Madrid decided to extend the contract of Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, who will return to the team for a 13th season.
The player’s contract will be extended by Madrid and Modric until June 2025. Despite not starting as much this season, Modric—one of Madrid’s captains—is anticipated to play a bigger part in Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield going year, particularly with Toni Kroos’ retirement.
Modric’s career with Real Madrid
Along with defender Nacho Fernández, he has won the most titles with Madrid in club history—26. Six Champions Leagues and four Spanish leagues are included in that list.
“Modric arrived at Real Madrid in 2012, and in his 12 seasons representing our shirt he has become a Real Madrid and world football legend,” Madrid said.
After leading Croatia to a runner-up position at the World Cup, Modric earned the Ballon d’Or, the FIFA Player of the Year Award, and the UEFA Player of the Year award in 2018.
The 2024/25 season will probably be the Ballon d’Or winner’s last one of his footballing career. He said he wishes to retire from professional football at Real Madrid only.
Modric holds the all-time record for most international caps for Croatia with 178 appearances. During his 534 Madrid appearances, he has scored 39 goals.
When asked about Kylian Mbappe, he said: “I’m grateful for his words, it was nice of him to say. I’m pleased he’s finally here at Real Madrid. He’s one of the very best and he’s shown it over the years.
“He’s a player who has won the World Cup, against me, unfortunately, but I’m delighted to have him on my team now. We’ll all help him out with whatever he needs to make sure he settles in quickly and shows his talent, because he can reach the very top.”
