Renato Sanches has not been included in the squad. Santos was asked why Matheus Nunes was selected instead of Renato.

“I’ve seen in the media a whole array of squad predictions and although they are very similar, I haven’t seen two that are exactly the same,” responded Santos. “If everybody in this room chose a 26-man squad, it would be a surprise if two were the same.

“It would not be elegant for me to say why one player was chosen over another – not for the player left out and not for the player included.”

Rafael Leao and Joao Felix (LW/RW) – Raphael Leao’s amazing form is a great news for Portugal following the upcoming World Cup. Joao Felix has been performing well for Atletico Madrid and so he has been included in the national team squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) – The Portuguese captain’s form is matter of concern as he is underperforming this season. He has managed to score only six goals in 2022/23 season. But he is a man of miracles who can turn the tables anytime soon.

Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva (CMs) – These two are undoubtedly two of the best midfielders in the world at present. Bruno has now become an important part of Manchester United since his debut for them. Both will be assisted by William Carvalho at back.

Ruben Dias and Pepe (CBs) – Manchester City’s defense looked unbreakable last season and he was the major reason behind it. Pepe might be old now but he is still performing good for Porto and has taken them to the Round Of 16 of UCL.

Raphael Guerreiro and Joao Cancelo (LB/RB) – Raphael Guerreiro’s Borussia Dortmund is underperforming this season. Ofcourse he will be criticized based on his team’s performance. On the other side, Joao Cancelo can be considered as the top three right-backs in the world and there is no doubt in it.

Rui Patricio (GK) – This could be Rui Patricio’s last World Cup including his teammates Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo. This might be his last chance to show what he is capable of.
