Hours after reporting on an incredible FA Cup comeback, a veteran football pundit made a mysterious retirement suggestion.
On Saturday, Coventry City, a Championship team, stunned Wolverhampton Wanderers with a stunning comeback victory to open the FA Cup quarterfinals.
After giving up two late goals to the Premier League team, Coventry appeared to be going out, but they rallied for two more goals in injury time to earn a historic 3-2 victory at Molineux.
Who better to provide excellent commentary for a moment as dramatic as Haji Wright’s winning goal in the hundredth minute than Clive Tyldesley?
While covering games for a variety of broadcasters, the renowned commentator has come up with some of the greatest quotes of all time.
Alongside Ally McCoist, the 69-year-old provided match commentary for ITV Sport. Coventry supporters will remember his analysis of Wright’s late goal for years to come.
Even though Tyldesley is one of the best football pundits out there, he made a suggestion following the game that he might soon retire.
Posting pictures from the commentary box on X, Tyldesley commented, “Maybe the last FA Cup tie I’ll ever call. Thank you for the big finish!!”
The news broke to the dismay of fans, who seized the chance to commend Tyldesley and express gratitude for his efforts.
“I really hope it’s not your last Clive,” one fan wrote.
“Loved your comms today and the chemistry with Ally [McCoist] is the best in the business.”
One Coventry fan wrote: “Thanks for making this afternoon’s game that bit more special,” while another said: “Ah no, don’t say that, [you] should still be the main commentator for @itvfootball.”
For many years, Tyldesley served as ITV’s primary pundit until Sam Matterface took over in 2020.
Matterface is scheduled to cover Sunday’s Manchester United vs. Liverpool quarterfinal match and will likely be in the gantry for whatever ITV semi-final is televised.
