Lionel Messi is now on a tear with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.
Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi appears to have decided on the club where he will retire. Following a spectacular season in Europe, Messi decided to join Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami this summer.
Messi’s current Inter Miami contract is slated to expire in 2025, and El Nacional said that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has no plans to retire in the United States.
According to the El Nacional story, Messi will depart Inter Miami in two years. According to the rumor, the great Argentine footballer will retire from his childhood club Newell’s Old Boys in his hometown Rosario.
Lionel Messi began his professional career at Newell’s Old Boys. Messi had to leave the Argentine club when he was 13 in order to move to Spain and join Catalan giants Barcelona. Messi cemented himself as a Barcelona legend after spending 20 years with the club.
Messi became the club’s all-time appearance and goal-scoring leader during his stay at Barcelona, with 672 goals in 778 games. He went on to win four Champions League titles and 11 La Liga crowns while wearing the Barcelona uniform.
Messi’s illustrious career at Barcelona came to an end in 2021 when the club’s administration failed to reach an agreement with the Argentine on a new contract. Messi decided to join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after leaving Barcelona.
Messi became a free agent this summer after his contract with PSG expired. This year, there were rumors that Messi would make an emotional homecoming to Barcelona. But, to put an end to all conjecture, Messi announced his transfer to MLS club Inter Miami.
The 7 times Ballon d’Or winner’s summer transfer to Inter Miami has been rather impressive thus far. This season, Messi has already led Inter Miami to their first League Cup victory. Messi has 11 goals in 12 appearances for the Herons in all competitions.
Lionel Messi is currently injured and was unable to play in Inter Miami’s last game versus Houston Dynamo in the US Open Cup final. Inter Miami was defeated 1-2 in that encounter.
When asked what it was like playing against Inter Miami without Messi, Dynamo head coach Ben Olsen was cited by CBS as responding: “He elevates everyone, and I saw a little bit when Wayne Rooney came to D.C. United, and when he was on the field, it just was different. You’re going to battle with a legend, a guy that you can believe in and that has just won everything.”
