Lionel Messi, the star of Inter Miami and Argentina, is scheduled to receive the highest civilian honour in the United States from President Joe Biden.
The White House announced on Saturday that Messi, NBA great Magic Johnson, and 17 other individuals will receive the coveted Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President Joe Biden.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the country’s highest civilian honor.
The official statement from the White House read: “President Biden believes great leaders keep the faith, give everyone a fair shot, and put decency above all else. These nineteen Americans are great leaders who have made America a better place. They are great leaders because they are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.”
On Messi being conferred the prestigious honour, the White House said: “He supports healthcare and education programs for children around the world through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.”

In the summer of 2023, the 37-year-old relocated to the United States, where he won the Leagues Cup for the first time with the Herons in his first season.
The team co-owned by David Beckham won the MLS Supporters Shield in his second season, but they fell to Atlanta United in the playoffs and could not win the MLS Cup 2024.
The Argentine won the title of Most Valuable Player of the 2024 Major League Soccer season.
