Karim Benzema is set to be called up for the Euros for the first time since 2015
Didier Deschamps has included Karim Benzema in his Euro 2020 squad. The France Football Federation has confirmed it on Tuesday.
It’s the first time since 2015 that Benzema will be called up to play for his national team. He was banned from his international duties due to a blackmailing scandal in 2016.
In 2016, Benzema said that Deschamps had “bowed to the pressure of a racist part of France” when leaving the player out of the Euros squad that year.
Although the 52 year old coach said that he would never forget Karim’s comments, he has never stated that he would not call him up again.
On Sunday, Benzema was named best French player in a foreign league by the French professional footballers’ union.
The 33 year old has scored 22 goals in La Liga and is the 3rd highest top scorer of the league this season.
Considering Karim in the squad, France’s attack could be a real problem for other teams. However, Portugal and England is so strong as compared to other teams.
The last Euros (2016) were won by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Euros were postponed in 2020.
