Jose Mourinho has recently talked about his thoughts on Papu Gomez’s ban from football for doping during the 2022 FIFA World Cup
Jose Mourinho of AS Roma insulted Monza midfielder Papu Gomez when he was banned for doping.
Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez was also a member of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, which was led by former PSG ace Lionel Messi. According to a FIFA statement, Gomez indicated that he took his child’s cough medicine since he wasn’t feeling well before the World Cup.
The Argentine winger won the UEFA Europa League with Sevilla, defeating Roma in the final. A few months after the victory, Gomez mocked former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, saying (via GOAL):
“Mourinho? I only have one memory of him and that is winning the Europa League with Sevilla against him a few months ago.”
Nonetheless, once Gomez tested positive for doping, Mourinho chose to exact his vengeance through a verbal war. In the post-match conference following Roma’s victory over Monza, the ‘Special One’ addressed the Argentine footballer and his ban. He stated:
“Gomez? He didn’t play in the Europa League final, I think he played against Juventus with positive control, but I don’t want to take that syrup otherwise I’ll be in trouble too.
“I don’t remember playing against him in the Europa League final. What happened to him isn’t my problem, dealing with the subject would put me in difficulty.”
In the 90th minute, Stephan El Shaarawy scored a late winner against Monza to help Roma win their fourth game of the season. Mourinho was sent off by the referee after his celebrations. As a result, he will miss the next Seria A encounter between the Giallorossi and Inter Milan.
Papu Gomez Reveals Public Statement On His Football Fan
Following the imposition of the two-year ban on the Argentine winger, Papu Gomez resorted to social media to send his message to the football world. He began by confirming that the Spanish anti-doping agency had informed him that his license had been suspended for two years.
The former Sevilla footballer then claimed on Sunday (October 22) that he accidentally ingested his child’s cough medicine, which contained Terbutaline. The medication was being used to treat an Argentine footballer’s child’s cough. He stated:
“The presumed violation originates from the presence of Terbutaline in my system, which I accidentally ingested with a spoonful of cough syrup for my son, to alleviate his cough.
“It is important to specify that Terbutaline is allowed for professional athletes and in no way does it improve performance in football.”
Terbutaline, according to Gomez, does not increase any athlete’s football play. As a result, he has contacted his lawyer to look into the matter because, according to Gomez, his case has not been handled properly.
