If Jose Mourinho gets his wish, he could take a player away from Pep Guardiola for just the second time in his career.
As the tenth different club to coach, Mourinho has just begun a new chapter in his successful management career by taking the helm of Fenerbahce, the Turkish powerhouse.
The 61-year-old has been quite active in the transfer market, bringing in players like Allan Saint-Maximin, Caglar Soyuncu, and Youssef En-Nesyri in an effort to bolster his squad.
However, he wishes to reinforce more. Mateo Kovacic is reportedly becoming a viable option for Fenerbahce, and the team’s sports director, Mario Branco, is scheduled to travel to England this week to negotiate a transfer, according to information from the Turkish media outlet Dirilis Postasi, which Sport Witness has translated and repeated.
According to reports, Branco intends to speak with both Manchester City and Kovacic directly before deciding whether or not to try to sign him for the Mourinho-managed team.
Kovacic left Chelsea for City last summer in a £25 million move, and under Guardiola, he helped the team win another Premier League championship.
In 46 appearances in all competitions, he scored three goals.
After being granted a break after representing Croatia in Euro 2024, the midfield player is anticipated to be in the United States with his colleagues for the preseason tour.
He will train with fellow countryman Josko Gvardiol before of City’s second preseason match on July 27 at Yankee Stadium against AC Milan.
In the summer of 2009, when Barcelona signed Maxwell and Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Barca in a trade, Mourinho’s only other purchase of a player from Guardiola was Samuel Eto’o (Barca to Inter).
Eto’o proceeded to secure a second straight triple crown.
