Jamie Vardy will leave Leicester City at the end of the season after 13 years.

After 13 years with Leicester City, Jamie Vardy will depart at the end of the 2024/25 season with memories that will “last a lifetime,” but he has stated that he is not retiring. Considered the team’s finest player ever, the 38-year-old played a key role in their historic victories in the FA Cup 2021 and the Premier League 2016.

Promoted as the Championship champions, Vardy signed a 12-month deal last summer, but this season has been difficult. He apologised to the fans this week and called his season a “complete embarrassment” after relegation was secured with five games remaining.

After spending £1 million to join Leicester from non-league Fleetwood in 2012, Vardy went on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s top attackers and an England international, making his narrative one of the most well-known in the contemporary period. In 496 games with Leicester, he has scored 198 goals.

Vardy became the oldest player to win the Premier League Golden Boot in 2019–20, at the age of 33. He has scored seven goals this season and 18 league goals as the team achieved promotion the previous season.

In his goodbye social media post, he claimed that Leicester “did the impossible” by winning the league and that he had lifelong memories, including a run to the Champions League quarterfinals and a relegation escape.

Vardy’s thankful words for Leicester City

“I have been here so long that I truly thought it would never end,” he said. “This has not only been really difficult for me to write but also a really difficult decision to make. Leicester City has been my second home, my extended family, my life for 13 years. The club, the city, the people, means so much to me and my family.”

Vardy stated that he would not be retiring, and Major League Soccer in the US is reportedly interested in him. “I want to keep playing and doing what I enjoy doing most, scoring goals. Hopefully there is one or two more for Leicester between now and the end of the season, and many more in the future. I might be 38 but I’ve still got the desire and ambition to achieve so much more.”

He reserved praise for the “band of brothers” from their title-winning season and for his first manager, Nigel Pearson, for enabling him to turn professional, and acknowledged his own character. “Thanks also to all the other managers, coaches and staff who have helped me and, in some cases, put up with me.”

With 18 points from 33 games, Leicester, who go to Wolves on Saturday, is now ranked 19th in the Premier League. Under Ruud van Nistelrooy, they have lost 16 of their last 18 games, and it is improbable that he will be the team’s manager next season.

Leicester’s chair, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, said: “Jamie is unique. He is a special player and an even more special person. He holds a place in the hearts of everyone connected to Leicester City, and he certainly has my deepest respect and affection. I am endlessly grateful for everything he has given to this football club.”
