Wildfires now sweeping across Los Angeles, California, have burned the £3.3 million home of a former Arsenal player.
Moving forward Between 2005 and 2012, Carlos Vela, who graduated from Arsenal’s development academy, played 29 Premier League games and scored three goals for Arsene Wenger’s team.
Despite being viewed as a promising young player, he departed the Gunners to sign with Real Sociedad of La Liga. He rose to prominence as one of Spain’s most productive forwards there before departing in 2018 to sign with LAFC, a new Major League Soccer team.
The now-35-year-old has lived in Malibu with his wife, Saioa Canibano, and their three kids, and has played there ever since.
However, on Thursday, his wife revealed on her Instagram page that the $4 million home they own was destroyed by the wildfire that is raging through the Palisades district of Los Angeles.
Five fires are raging in the LA region right now, and firefighters are doing everything possible to put them out. There was just one fire that had not yet been completely suppressed as of Friday morning US time.
Given that a strong storm hit areas of California earlier this week, there are reportedly worries that the anticipated high winds could worsen matters.
One of the fires, known as “Kenneth,” is presently affecting areas of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, and a man has been arrested on suspicion of sparking it.
How did the wildfire spread?
A ‘big propane tank or flamethrower’ was discovered with the man before he was restrained by locals, according to American media reports. Police have verified that the man was apprehended attempting to create a fire.
An LAPD officer told the media on Friday morning: “What we know right now is that the incident occurred here and about 20-30 minutes later, a suspect was detained by citizens.
“At this time, that’s what we believe [that the fire was started deliberately]. It’s being investigated as a crime.”
The Palisades fire, which has reportedly burned over almost 20,000 acres in Malibu’s Pacific Palisades, is presently northwest of the Kenneth fire.
Several well-known Hollywood celebrities, such as Paris Hilton, Mel Gibson, and Billy Crystal, have said that their residences are among the more than 2,000 buildings that have burned down due to the wildfires.
