Atletico Madrid will face Real Madrid in the first El Derby of the 2023/24 La Liga season
Real Madrid will look to extend their unbeaten start to the season to seven games when they face Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby on Sunday at Wanda Metropolitano.
Los Blancos presently lead the La Liga table with 15 points from their first five games, while Atletico Madrid is eighth with seven points from their first four games.
Even at this early stage of the season, seventh place in Spain’s top flight is not what Atletico would have hoped for, but they have a game in hand on 18 of the other 19 teams in the division, as their match against Sevilla was postponed earlier this month due to bad weather.
Diego Simeone’s team began the season with a 3-1 win over Granada before drawing with Real Betis in their second encounter; a 7-0 triumph over Rayo Vallecano came at the end of August, but they were defeated 3-0 by Valencia in the league last weekend.
Real Madrid has not missed a beat this season, winning six straight games in all competitions, including the first five games of the 2023-24 La Liga season.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side has already beaten Athletic Bilbao, Almeria, Celta Vigo, Getafe, and Real Sociedad in Spain’s top tier, and they began their Champions League group-stage campaign with a 1-0 win against Union Berlin on Wednesday night.
Jude Bellingham’s last-gasp goal gave Los Blancos all three points, and the England international has now scored six goals in six games for the club during a fantastic start to his career.
