Besiktas win Super Lig by one-goal margin over Galatasaray in stunning final day
Besiktas won the Super Lig title beating Galatasaray in an incredibly dramatic final day of the Turkish league season.
The league title race was so intense because of the the other two teams – Galatasaray and Fenerbahce who also had a chance to do the same.
Galatasaray were actually winning the title after an hour, as they led 2-1 over Yeni Malatyaspor while Besiktas were drawing 1-1 with Goztepe.
However, on loan Algerian winger Rachid Ghezzal from Leicester City scored a 69th-minute penalty to give Besiktas a 2-1 win.
Although Galatasaray won their match by 3-1, Beskitas actually finished at the top of the points table which made them the Turkish Champions.
Galatasaray finished second with 84 points with a goal difference of +44. On the other hand, Besiktas ended the season with the same points with a goal difference of +45.
The first goal of the game was scored by Croatian defender Domagoj Vida. It was enough to help the Black Eagles to their first Super Lig title since 2017.
