Here we show you the decline in Barcelona’s performance in last 10 years
Barcelona are out of the UEFA Champions League title race after facing a 0-3 defeat against Bayern Munich. And it’s an obvious thing why Barca fans are missing Lionel Messi’s presence in the team.
The last time Barcelona lifted the Champions League trophy was seven years ago when Luis Enrique lead the club to their fifth tournament title in 2014/15 season. Of course Messi was the biggest reason behind their title reign.
To be honest, Barca has not been the same since that season. The club has failed to reach the final in every UCL season after that time period.
Season | Last Stage Reached |
2013/14 | Quarter-Finals |
2014/15 | Champions |
2015/16 | Quarter-Finals |
2016/17 | Quarter-Finals |
2017/18 | Quarter-Finals |
2018/19 | Semi-Finals |
2019/20 | Quarter-Finals |
2020/21 | Round of 16 |
2021/22 | Group Stage |
2022/23 | Group Stage |
Lionel Messi left Barcelona in 2021 and joined PSG to reunite with one of his closest friends Neymar. He had one of the worst stars to a season there but he has been doing wonders this season.
The club has changed six managers including Luis Enrique, Ernesto Valverde, Quique Setién, Ronald Koman, Sergi Barjuan and Xavi, since their last Champions League reign in 2014. Of course Valverde was the most successful manager of these.
And what do we mean by this? It’s just that Messi was the backbone of Barcelona and even their fans agree to this fact. They haven’t been the same since his departure.
With him on the field, they at least reached the quarter-finals in every single season (except 2020/21 season) as showed above in the table.
Messi never played in the Europa League during his 17 years at the Spanish club. The club has played it in every year since his departure.
