When Turkey played Hungary in the UEFA Nations League, Arda Guler, and Dominik Szoboszlai were the centre of attention.
An altercation broke out on the pitch between Szoboszlai and Guler during a match in which Hungary suffered a crushing 3-0 loss. The two spoke with each other, and Szoboszlai sparked more controversy by posting the cryptic phrase “1,088” on social media.
Guler’s lack of playing time at Real Madrid was subtly mocked by this. After all, the Turkish international has fallen behind in the hierarchy after playing exactly 1,088 minutes of football for Los Blancos this season.
Szoboszlai’s tweet didn’t go well with Guler, who has now responded through social media. The Real Madrid starlet posted a picture on his Instagram story with the captain, “This guy is a joke. Isn’t 6 goals enough to shut you up?”
Guler’s message to Szoboszlai was a reference to Turkey’s 6-1 aggregate victory over Hungary, which enabled the country to earn its first-ever promotion to the top division of the UEFA Nations League.
In addition, Hungary’s loss that evening marked their first home loss to Turkey since 2006. In light of that, Guler would undoubtedly get the final laugh, especially given that he had contributed significantly to Hungary’s loss by scoring the game’s second goal.
Whether Szoboszlai responds on social media in the future is still up in the air.
