In the second quarter-final of the 2024 Euro, Portugal will face France to advance to the semi-finals and attempt to win their second Euro title.
2016 Euro champions Portugal are once again against the 2018 world champions France. Cristiano Ronaldo will be against his apprentice Kylian Mbappe who has only scored one goal in the tournament so far. Ronaldo, on the other hand, has one assist to his name.
To continue their pursuit of gold, Roberto Martinez’s team overcame a resilient Slovenian team in dramatic fashion in penalties, while Les Bleus’ 1-0 victory over Belgium was likewise far from convincing.
Portugal is already performing better than when they were eliminated in the last 16 of the Euro 2020. If they defeat the French in Hamburg, they will be rewarded with an equally difficult semi-final matchup against Germany or Spain. However, their shooting boots have deserted them at the worst possible time.
Martinez’s team has failed to score in both of their most recent Euro 2024 matches. They were also stunned 2-0 by Georgia’s historic team in their previous Group F match. However, their opponents have also failed to play to the high standards of offense that were anticipated of them.
Though no French player has scored a goal from open play in the first four games of the current European Championship, Didier Deschamps’s team has once again advanced to the quarterfinals, driving off the ghosts of their disappointing Euro 2020 campaign.
However, Les Bleus are on their worst run of not scoring from open play since an equal stretch of five games from March to September 2013, during Deschamps’s earlier years at the command.
