Oscar Piastri, born on April 6, 2001, in Melbourne, Australia, is one of the most exciting young talents in Formula 1 today. Known for his calm demeanor, exceptional racecraft, and rapid adaptability, Piastri has quickly established himself as a future world championship contender.

Early Career

Piastri began karting young before moving to Europe to pursue single-seater racing. His breakthrough came in 2019 when he won the Formula Renault Eurocup with R-ace GP, defeating fellow future F1 driver Victor Martins. This success earned him a spot in the prestigious FIA Formula 3 championship in 2020, where he dominated with Prema Racing, securing the title in his rookie season.

His meteoric rise continued in 2021 when he stepped up to Formula 2, again with Prema. Despite being a rookie, Piastri showcased remarkable consistency, winning six races and clinching the championship. He became only the third driver (after Charles Leclerc and George Russell) to win consecutive F3 and F2 titles in his first attempts.

Despite his success, Piastri faced an unexpected hurdle in 2022. As Alpine’s reserve driver, he was expected to replace Fernando Alonso, but when a seat opened, Alpine announced him without confirmation. Piastri publicly denied the move, leading to a contract dispute. The FIA’s Contract Recognition Board ruled in favor of McLaren, securing him a seat alongside Lando Norris for 2023.

Piastri’s debut season with McLaren was impressive. After initial struggles with an uncompetitive car, mid-season upgrades transformed the MCL60 into a podium contender. Piastri announced himself with a sprint race victory in Qatar, becoming the first rookie to win an F1 sprint, and secured two Grand Prix podiums (Japan and Qatar). His adaptability and maturity earned widespread praise, with many comparing him to legends like Lewis Hamilton in their debut years.

Recent Success

In 2024, Piastri continues to shine, regularly challenging Norris and established stars. His strong qualifying pace and race-day composure suggest he is on the path to greatness. With McLaren’s resurgence, Piastri is seen as a future world champion, combining raw speed with strategic intelligence.

Piastri is known for his smooth driving style, precision under pressure, and ability to manage tires effectively. Off-track, he is reserved but analytical, often praised for his work ethic and technical feedback.

Piastri won his first race at the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as he secured his third victory of the year and the lead in the world championship.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took charge of the race and won his second straight race after Piastri profited from a penalty. He had more than enough speed to maintain second place, but he was given a five-second penalty for illegally maintaining Piastri’s lead by running off the track at the first corner.

Following his incident in qualifying, Lando Norris of McLaren moved up from 10th on the grid to finish fourth, behind Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. As the race came to a close, Norris, using an off-set tire strategy, was catching up to Leclerc. However, his medium tires lost their advantage, and the Ferrari driver managed to hold him back.
