India’s Test regulars have not participated in the Ranji Trophy for several years. Here are the last appearances of some prominent players:
Virat Kholi
Virat Kohli last played a Ranji Trophy match in 2012. The match took place from November 2 to November 5, 2012, Ghaziabad, where Delhi faced Uttar Pradesh. In that game, Kohli scored 14 runs in the first innings and 43 runs in the second innings before being dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar both times. Since then, he has not participated in any Ranji Trophy matches, despite being included in discussions about potential participation in upcoming seasons.
Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma last played a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai on January 6, 2015, against Uttar Pradesh. In that match, he scored 113 runs off 140 balls. Since then, he has not participated in any domestic first-class matches, although he has recently resumed training with the Mumbai Ranji team in preparation for the upcoming matches in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season. As of now, it remains uncertain whether he will play in the next scheduled match against Jammu & Kashmir on January 23, 2025. His participation is still under consideration as he has not yet confirmed his availability for the game.
Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah last played in the Ranji Trophy during the 2016/17 season. His final appearance was in a semi-final match against Jharkhand from January 1 to January 4, 2017, where he delivered an outstanding performance, taking 6 wickets for 29 runs. This remarkable effort helped Gujarat secure a place in the Ranji Trophy final for only the second time in the tournament’s history.
Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill last played a Ranji Trophy match on June 2022. His appearance was in the quarter-finals against Madhya Pradesh, where he scored 19 and 9 runs in two innings. After nearly two years away from domestic red-ball cricket, he has confirmed his availability for Punjab’s upcoming match against Karnataka, scheduled to start on January 23, 2025.
KL Rahul
KL Rahul last played a Ranji Trophy match in January 2019. Specifically, he participated in a match against Uttar Pradesh on January 29, 2019, during the 2018-19 season of the tournament. Since then, he has not appeared in any Ranji games due to various commitments and injuries.
As of January 2025, there is speculation about several of these players, including Kohli and Rohit, potentially returning to the Ranji Trophy for the upcoming matches starting January 23, after a period of poor performance in international cricket.
