Riyan Parag, the stand-in captain of the Rajasthan Royals, has been fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their recent match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 30, 2025. This fine was imposed after the Royals secured a narrow six-run victory, posting 182 runs and restricting CSK to 176.
The penalty comes under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate offences. Since this was the team’s first offence of the season, Parag received a monetary penalty rather than facing a suspension, as per new IPL regulations introduced for 2025. He becomes the second captain this season to be fined for similar reasons, following Hardik Pandya of the Mumbai Indians.
Despite the setback of the fine, Parag’s performance as captain included a significant contribution with the bat, scoring 37 runs off 28 balls, and he also executed a notable catch to dismiss Shivam Dube during the match. The Royals will look to build on this victory when they face the Punjab Kings next on April 5.
Changes in Slow-over run rate Rule
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented significant changes to the slow over-rate rules for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. These modifications aim to alleviate penalties for captains regarding slow over rates and introduce a new demerit points system.

Elimination of Match Bans: Captains will no longer face match bans for slow over-rate offences. Instead, they will be penalized with demerit points, which will remain on their record for three years. A ban will only be enforced in extreme cases, marking a shift from previous seasons where captains could be suspended for repeated offences.
Overall, these adjustments reflect the BCCI’s response to feedback from players and teams, aiming to create a more balanced and fair playing environment in the IPL.
