In a significant rule change for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to eliminate the ban on captains for slow over-rate offences. This decision was made during a meeting held on March 20, 2025, where all IPL captains and managers were present:
Rules Changes In IPL 2025:
Demerit Points System: Instead of facing a match ban for slow over-rate offences, captains will now incur demerit points. The severity of the offence will dictate the number of points assigned. For instance, a Level 1 offence can lead to a deduction of 25% to 75% of match fees and demerit points, while a Level 2 offence may result in four demerit points.
Accumulation and Penalties: These demerit points will remain on record for three years. Accumulating four demerit points could lead to further penalties, including fines or additional demerit points, which might eventually result in a match ban if severe enough.
Immediate Impact: Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai Indians, is set to be the last captain penalized under the previous system, as he will miss the team’s season opener against Chennai Super Kings due to a slow over-rate offence from the previous season.
