Kamindu Mendis has been awarded the ICC Emerging Player of the Year 2024, a recognition that highlights his remarkable contributions to Sri Lankan cricket throughout the year.
In 2024, Mendis, a 26-year-old left-handed batter, accumulated a total of,1,451 runs across all formats, achieving an impressive average of over 50. His standout performance came in Test cricket, where he scored 1,049 runs in just nine matches at an extraordinary average of 74.92. This made him one of only six players to surpass 1,000 Test runs during the year, and he recorded the highest average among them.
Mendis’s year was marked by his ability to perform under pressure, as he notched up five centuries and three-half centuries showcasing his skill in crucial moments. Notably, his century against England, where he scored 113 runs, was particularly significant as it came during a challenging match situation. His consistency and ability to convert starts into substantial scores were pivotal in Sri Lanka’s campaign for a place in the ICC World Test Championship Final.

In addition to his Test success, Mendis also demonstrated versatility across formats. He played a total of 34 matches in 2024, which included performances in ODIs and T20s.
