For the first time in history, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) recorded an attendance of over 350,700 spectators for a Test match during the fourth Test between India and Australia, held from December 26 to 30, 2024. This remarkable figure surpassed the previous record of 350,534 set during the 1937 Ashes series against England, which featured legendary cricketer Don Bradman.
The attendance was bolstered by impressive daily turnouts:
. Day 1: 87,242
. Day 2: 85,147 (a record for that day)
. Day3: 83,073 (also a record)
. Day4: 43,867
. Day5 (up to lunch): 51,371, with numbers expected to rise further as the day progressed.
This event not only set a new benchmark for Test matches in Australia but also made it the second-highest attended Test match globally, trailing only behind the famous India-Pakistan Test at Eden Gardens in 1999, which attracted 465,000 spectators over its duration.
