A few days ago, Barcelona pulled off an incredible 5–4 Champions League comeback victory over Benfica, thanks to two goals from Raphinha. In addition to securing the victory, his late goal was his best of the year.
After scoring the game-winning goal in the 96th minute to give Barcelona a thrilling 5-4 Champions League victory over Benfica, Raphinha shouted his joy. His efforts enabled Barcelona to overcome 3-1 and 4-2 deficits and reach the competition’s round of 16.
Recorded at 95 minutes and eight seconds, Raphinha’s late goal was Barcelona’s most recent tournament victory since 2003–04. With eight goals and two assists this season, Raphinha has contributed to ten goals, more than any other player in the Champions League.
Reflecting on his form, he told Movistar, “I think I’m in the best moment of my career.” He acknowledged the challenge of playing against Benfica, praising their skill and high-level players. Despite trailing 3-1 at halftime, Barcelona remained focused and turned the game around.
Being the first Champions League game to finish with a 5–4 result, the match was historic. In November 2016, Borussia Dortmund defeated Legia Warsaw 8–4, and Barcelona became just the second side to win despite giving up four goals. It was Barca’s first time winning a Champions League or European Cup game after falling behind by two goals.
Head coach Hansi Flick highlighted the team’s resilience, stating, “The most positive thing was the mentality we had; we came back and it’s wonderful, this is football.” He admitted never experiencing such a comeback before. Benfica posed a significant challenge, forcing Barcelona to defend deeply throughout the match.
Tensions flared at full-time as both teams clashed on the field. Raphinha revealed that some Benfica players insulted him due to frustration over an unpenalized incident involving Fermin Lopez before his winning goal. “I am a person who respects everyone,” Raphinha said. “When I left the field there were people who insulted me.”
Raphinha acknowledged taking insults but made it clear that he respects people if they return the favour. Although he acknowledged that feelings were running high following such a fierce game, he firmly opposed opponents’ disrespectful actions. As he defends himself when needed, the winger stays committed to upholding professionalism.
