According to reports, Liverpool is thinking about stealing one of Bordeaux’s best young players in order to benefit from their terrible financial circumstances.

Bordeaux was forced to declare bankruptcy this week when FSG, the owners of Liverpool, withdrew from negotiations to purchase the struggling French team.

Bordeaux announced their filing for bankruptcy on Thursday night in a statement issued by the club in response to continuing financial issues that would otherwise subject them to “heavy sanctions.”

After being administratively demoted to the Championnat National, the third division of French football, the former Champions League team renounced their professional status.

Bordeaux’s situation is likely to worsen as they appear to be losing most of their top players as well as their most talented young players.

Liverpool is reportedly pursuing Bordeaux centre-back Mathys Angely, 17, who is expected to be available for free, according to Foot Mercato.

Who is Mathys Angely?

Although he can play as a defensive midfielder or on the left side of defence, Angely’s primary position is centre-back. Prior to joining Bordeaux in 2022, he played for the local team ESA Brive for the majority of his youth career.

Although he is under contract with Bordeaux until 2028, Angely is expected to be available for free this summer, according to Transfermarkt, which values him at €50,000 (£42,000).

He has participated in Bordeaux’s youth programs and made his senior squad debut the previous campaign. The defender has additionally played for France’s U16 and U17 teams.

Angely appeared in five games for Bordeaux’s first team in the previous campaign, following his senior debut in a Ligue 2 triumph over Caen. In his 15 youth football games for the team, he scored twice.

At this summer’s U17 Euros in Cyprus, when Angely also competed for France, the team was eliminated in the group stage after losing to Portugal and England.

In France’s match against the Young Lions, which saw England win 4-0, he started at centre-back.

Notwithstanding the outcome, Angely “wowed everyone” at the U17 Euros, according to Foot Mercato, and “was one of the best players in his category” overall.

According to the French source, Liverpool is not the only French club interested in signing the player; he has “impressed with his serenity on the ball and his technical ease”.
