A punishment from UEFA could be imposed on two Spanish players for chants about Gibraltar during their Euro 2024 celebrations.
Spain held a title parade in the heart of Madrid on Tuesday to commemorate their victory against England in the European Championship.
However, some players’ chants about Gibraltar, an enclave at the southern tip of Spain that the British have ruled since the 18th century, soured the festivities.
Alvaro Morata later performed the same cry, which Rodri and young sensation Lamine Yamal were observed singing. Rodri and Morata could be banned by UEFA for their shouts about Gibraltar, according to a recent article from Marca.
To investigate a possible violation of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations by Rodri and Morata, the EFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been assigned.
If UEFA decides to punish the Spanish duo for their antics during their Euro 2024 celebrations, they could face a two-match penalty.
A UEFA statement read: “A Uefa Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector is being appointed to evaluate a potential violation of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations by the players Rodrigo Hernández Cascante and Álvaro Morata in the context of conduct that occurred during the public presentation of the Uefa Euro 2024 trophy in Madrid on 15 July 2024.
“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”
Following criticism of Spain’s chanting by Gibraltar officials, there may be a penalty.
According to a statement from the government of the territory, “many” Spanish players had made “bitter remarks about Gibraltar.”
It added: “This is a totally unnecessary mixing of sporting success with discriminatory political statements that are hugely offensive to Gibraltarians.”
What did Gibraltar’s chief minister say about this?
Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo also slammed Spain as he took to social media to make his feelings clear on the chanting.
“The Rock is OURS,” he wrote.
“Mixing a sporting victory and the chant that glorifies the dictatorial politics of a mass murderer like Franco and his fascist regime’s attempt to usurp a neighbouring territory, that is also a UEFA nation, is worse than disgusting.
“This cannot stand unchallenged.”
Two important members of Spain’s Euros-winning team were Rodri and Morata. The forward captained the national team, and the Manchester City midfielder was named Player of the Tournament.
