With its inauguration in 1916, the Copa America boasts the distinction of being the world football league’s oldest continental event.

Over the course of the next 100 years, the tournament has seen numerous upgrades and modifications, including a name change from the South American Championship and significant expansions to include more teams from the CONMEBOL federation and its neighbours in CONCACAF.

The Copa America has become a big international competition that rivals the European Championships due to format changes and increased global attention.

As the search for a CONCACAF winner continues ahead of the USA event in 2024, teams from South America have won most Copa America tournaments.
