Xavi’s future at Barcelona is still a question for the club because of their president Joan Laoprta’s recent statement.
One question has dominated Barcelona’s early days of the season’s last international break: Will Xavi Hernández decide to resign as head coach of the first team at the end of the campaign?
Following his announcement in late January that he would be leaving the team, Xavi has seen his team improve and advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.
There has been much conjecture that a further push in the European Cup may cause the legendary midfielder to reconsider and return for one more season.
This is what Laopta said in his statement, according to Mundo Deportivo.
“Yes, absolutely. He already knows. I’d like him to stay.
“He keeps saying he’ll leave in June, but we’ll see. We don’t want to put this pressure on ourselves to make a decision for ourselves because the way things are going is working for us now.
“Any manager who comes will need to adapt to our structure. Barça is above managers, players, presidents or executives. Everyone. We have created a successful model and the manager will need to adapt.
“Whoever might come, will need to wait until the end of the season because we are not touching anything until Xavi makes his final decision.”
President Joan Laporta went a step further and stated that he wants Xavi to stay and won’t make any calls to other coaches until the current one is positive he wants to leave.
Sporting Director Deco confirmed this week that no discussions have been held with possible candidates to replace Xavi just yet.
It’s amazing how quickly things can change in football and how the outcome always determines whether a coach should be retained or fired.
And if Barça loses to Paris Saint-Germain quite convincingly, there won’t be many people urging Xavi to stay, and instead, the talk will shift to discussing who would be the greatest choice to take his position.
