Lionel Messi could become the only second player in history to win the Super Ballon d’Or, after Alfredo Di Stefano
According to reports, Lionel Messi may become the second recipient of the unique Super Ballon d’Or trophy. According to Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio, the Argentine superstar could be in line for the prestigious France Football Prize.
The Super Ballon d’Or is awarded to players who have excelled throughout the last 30 years. Alfredo di Stefano, a Real Madrid great, is the sole winner to date. He won it in 1989, following a spectacular run of sustained success with Los Blancos.
France Football has not nominated a player for the award since then. According to di Marzio’s report, it is exclusively open to European players, with di Stefano, an Argentine, winning because he carried a Spanish passport. As a result, Messi may be eliminated from contention.
The 36-year-old is set to earn his ninth Ballon d’Or at a ceremony in Paris today (October 30). While numerous talents, including Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, have staked their claims, the Argentine appears to be the favorite.
Did Erling Haaland Deserve To Win The 2023 Ballon d’Or?
After a year in which he finally hoisted the hitherto unattainable World Cup trophy, Messi is unquestionably the frontrunner.
The small Argentine is hoping to add an eighth prize to his collection, and there are few possibilities who can stop him. Erling Haaland, on the other hand, is one of those capable of stopping the former Barcelona star.
The Norwegian colossus had a record-breaking maiden season in Manchester, concluding with a slew of individual and collective trophies. Haaland crushed Premier League and European defenses, putting up Messi-like figures that drove City to legendary treble-winning glory.
It won’t be easy to dethrone Messi this year, given that this is likely the 36-year-old’s final chance at another Ballon d’Or, but there will be no complaints if Haaland succeeds in unseating the Inter Miami striker on October 30.
