Sources associated with the club said that he breathed his last on Sunday morning in his ancestral village near Imphal in Manipur. He was suffering from the disease for a long time. He has a wife along with a baby child.
The club posted on Twitter, “The Mohun Bagan family is deeply saddened by the untimely demise of former club captain Manitombi Singh.” The club said, “Our condolences are with the family at this difficult time. May the soul of Manitombi Singh find peace. ‘

Manitombi was a key member of coach Stephen Constantine’s Indian Under-23 team that won the LG Cup by defeating Vietnam 3–2 in 2003 in Ho Chi Minh City. It was India’s first international title win after winning the eight-nation tournament in Singapore in 1971.
Manitombi represented India at the 2002 Busan Asian Games. He made his Mohun Bagan debut in 2003 and under his captaincy in 2004, the team became the winner of the All Airlines Gold Cup. He last played in the Manipur State League in 2015-16.
